Choosing a 15.5oz selvedge denim fabric is not simply about making a pair of jeans heavier. For a denim brand, the right weight influences the silhouette, the way the garment feels on the body, the cutting plan and the finished product’s character. The goal is to match the fabric to your design—not to choose the highest ounce weight on the swatch card.
At HIMDENIM, we help brands compare available denim options before committing to samples or bulk fabric. One fabric worth reviewing for a structured indigo project is HB1524, a narrow-width, 100% cotton selvedge denim with a stated weight of 15.5oz.
Below are the specifications shown on the HB1524 fabric card. Please confirm current-lot details before ordering.
HB1524: Fabric specifications
The physical swatch card identifies the following details:
| Specification | HB1524 |
|---|---|
| Fabric weight | 15.5oz |
| Composition | 100% cotton |
| Color | Indigo blue |
| Listed width | 30/31 inches (approximately 76–79 cm) |
| Fabric reference | HB1524 |
| Edge detail | Visible redline selvedge on the photographed swatch |
The swatch photo includes darker and lighter denim references, but a photograph cannot establish the exact result of a wash process. Before production, ask for the current physical shade, usable width, finishing details and shrinkage information for the specific lot.
What changes when you move up to 15.5oz denim?
Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard. Moving from a lighter denim to 15.5oz generally adds substance, but the final hand feel also depends on yarn, weave, finishing and laundering.
- 12–13oz: often a versatile starting point for everyday jeans where comfort and flexibility of styling matter.
- Around 14oz: a common middle ground for premium rigid denim, with noticeable substance without pushing into very heavy territory.
- 15.5oz: a stronger choice when a brand wants a more substantial hand feel and a visibly structured shape, especially in straight, relaxed or workwear-influenced designs.
Heavier is not automatically better. A 15.5oz fabric may need more break-in time than a lighter option and can feel warmer. If your target customer expects a soft first wear or a slim, close-fitting silhouette, compare physical samples before deciding.
Why the 30/31-inch selvedge width matters
One easily missed specification is fabric width. HB1524 is listed at 30/31 inches, far narrower than regular wide-width denim. That matters to the garment costing and cutting plan.
A narrow-width layout may require more linear yards for the same number of garments. Pattern pieces, pocket sizes, sizes in the order, the usable edge and whether the selvedge will be exposed all affect marker efficiency. For a realistic quotation, ask the manufacturer to calculate consumption from the actual pattern rather than applying a generic yards-per-pair estimate.
If your design uses a visible selvedge side seam or cuff, communicate that during pattern development. The selvedge is both a fabric construction detail and a potential design detail; how it appears on the final garment depends on the cutting plan.
Which garments suit 15.5oz indigo denim?
For premium labels, a fabric in this weight range can be worth testing for:
- Straight-leg and relaxed jeans where the leg should maintain a clean, substantial outline.
- Heritage and workwear trousers featuring functional pocket construction and robust stitching details.
- Structured denim jackets when the intended look is more architectural than soft and drapey.
- Raw-denim-inspired collections, provided the actual finish, shrinkage and wash behavior are confirmed before sampling.
The garment photographs in our development references illustrate useful details: a broad straight-leg shape, prominent front patch pockets, back flap pockets and metal button closures. These are construction references—not a claim that a particular garment was made using HB1524.

These garment photographs demonstrate possible design and construction details; they are not verified as garments made from fabric HB1524.
Four checks to make before cutting a sample
1. Check the actual hand feel. The ounce weight does not tell you everything about stiffness. Request a physical swatch or trial yardage if hand feel is central to your design.
2. Confirm width and consumption. A 30/31-inch narrow-width denim should be planned differently from a 58/60-inch fabric. Ask for a cutting estimate against your pattern and size range.
3. Confirm shrinkage and finishing. Do not assume a fabric is sanforized, unsanforized or prewashed from the weight alone. Confirm the finishing process and the tested dimensional change before grading a production pattern.
4. Test the desired wash. Indigo shade, color loss, hand feel and final dimensions can change during washing. Approve the actual wash sample if your brand requires a specific faded blue or vintage finish.
Sampling and bulk sourcing with HIMDENIM
For selected in-stock selvedge fabrics, HIMDENIM’s standard bulk starting point is generally 300 yards per fabric/color. Depending on current stock, smaller options may include approximately 10–20 yards of cut yardage for development or an approximately 100-yard roll. Small cuts normally have a higher price per yard than bulk orders. Availability, exact cut length, price and shipping are confirmed per fabric before invoicing.
If you need an exclusive construction, a different width, color or special selvedge design, that is a separate development discussion and may involve a higher made-to-order minimum. See our selvedge fabric development options.

Frequently asked questions
Is 15.5oz denim considered heavyweight?
Yes, 15.5oz is generally described as heavyweight or substantial denim in jeans development. Its exact feel still depends on construction and finishing.
Is 100% cotton selvedge denim stretch denim?
HB1524 is listed as 100% cotton, with no elastane in the stated composition. Cotton denim can have a little mechanical give, but it is not the same as an elastane-blend stretch denim.
Can I use 15.5oz selvedge denim for wide-leg jeans?
Yes, it can be a good option for a wide or relaxed silhouette when the brand wants visible structure. The result should be checked in a fitted garment sample, because pattern shape and finishing are just as important as weight.
Can I order a small quantity before bulk?
Small cut yardage may be possible for selected fabrics, subject to the current stock position. Share your required yardage and shipping country so we can confirm an option before you order.
Ask for the HB1524 specification and sample options
If you’re developing a premium denim collection, send us HB1524, your planned product, approximate order quantity, destination country and whether you need fabric only or garment development. We can check the current fabric status and discuss a suitable testing route.
